City Gate “Šiljak”

The tower/gate is rectangular in plan, built of brick, with an arched passageway for the gate. Above the passage/gate, one level has been preserved, with good reason to believe there was once another. The tower is roofed and still serves today as an active communication point leading into the modern town via a contemporary bridge. The tower has two Gothic bifora windows, and the gate faces east, toward the existing parts of the fortified town. It once had a drawbridge over a man-made canal that connected the meander of the Mostonga River. This canal, with its earthen rampart and palisades, enclosed the suburb, which is flanked by the waters of the Mostonga from the north and south. The suburb today consists of about thirty houses. At its far western–northwestern end stood the fortified castle.
